The following classes are taught by local artists and creatives, and with generous funding are offered free for our over 50 years of age community here in the North Fork Valley.

Pre-registration for all classes is required, as many classes have limited participants.

BEGINNING POTTERY

March 5th to 28th.
Tuesdays & Thursdays, 10am -12pm. 

Paonia Clayworks

In this four week beginners pottery course taught by Summer Ester Orr we will focus on hand building techniques. We will explore functional objects like cups, bowls, trays, and other vessels. Building techniques learned will include attachments, slab building, using molds, and pinch pots. Decorative techniques will include basic glazing, under glazes, and other types of surface decoration. Class includes one 25 lb bag of clay, glazes, and firing.

Artist Teacher: 

Summer Ester Orr is a Honduran-American creative practitioner and educator living in rural Colorado.  Summer is active in the southwest (NV, UT, CO) and in various rural arts organizations such as Epicenter, Elsewhere Studios and Paonia Clayworks. She frequently organizes workshops and classes to further arts education outside of academia. Alongside design and sculptural work, Summer makes functional pottery using local resources and fires them wherever there is access to a kiln. She is an active bird-watcher, frog-catcher, and observer of the natural world.

GENTLE MOVEMENT & YOGA

March 4th – 29th

Increase and/or maintain mobility with movements that can be integrated into your everyday life.  This class helps to build strength and flexibility and is suitable for all levels. Multiple modifications will be introduced and chairs are available for seated exercises for all to enjoy.

*Bring a positive attitude, a mat, water bottle and wear comfortable clothing.

Artist Teacher Bio

Mona Payne has been dancing her whole life. She is passionate about all kinds of movement and holds a Brown Belt in Nia (which includes, yoga, modern, jazz and African dance.) STORYTELLING

Join seasoned memoir teacher, yuri chicovsky, in this fun and relaxed course designed to bring an added level of confidence and awareness to your storytelling repertoire. Over six weeks of once-weekly classes, explore the timeless art of storytelling. Using a fun and creative selection process, students will curate several life stories for telling in both casual and formal settings, including campfires, family gatherings, local radio, and beyond!

WATERCOLOR

April 29th – May 22nd

In the watercolor Artful Aging class, students will learn the basics of watercolor painting over 4 weeks. Two classes per week will cover foundational techniques, color mixing and brushwork. The course will be a mix of theoretical topics and application of techniques to still life, florals and landscape subjects. Watercolor is the ideal medium to begin to learn painting. I have traveled the world with a sketchbook and a small watercolor kit! 

Artist Teacher Bio: 

Dione Holt is a Colorado based landscape artist originally from Australia, but now based on the Western Slope. Dione has studied painting and drawing at the Houston and Denver Art Students leagues and is currently studying under Scott Christensen. Dione paints plein air and works in the studio from postcard sized studies from travels around Colorado. She is inspired by the Colorado landscape and the changing colors and light of the season. She has had plein air work juried into the Plein Air Artists of Colorado National exhibition, the Crested Butte Plein Air Invitational and other local exhibitions in the Western Slope Region.
