Great Basin National Park Foundation-University of Nevada, Reno Artist-in-Residence Program – Application Deadline March 1, 2023

2023 welcomes the third annual GBNPF-UNR Artist-in-Residence Program at Great Basin National Park. This regional residency program is currently open to artists living in the western US including Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. The 2 to 4 week camping residency, occurring between June and September, is open to visual artists, literary artists, musicians and other creative activity media artists (performance, theatre, dance, composers, etc.)

This artist-in-residence program invites artists to reside within the park to be inspired by and create works of art in the unique natural and cultural settings of Great Basin. Artists will be surrounded by the natural beauty of, from the 13,063-foot summit of Wheeler Peak to the depths of Lehman Caves. The park offers the solitude of the wilderness and provides expansive and renowned dark-sky stargazing. The sights, sounds, and textures of the environment, along with uninterrupted time, offer a respite from typical daily life and provide inspiration for creative work.

“MixTek Mystics” Workshop with Amanda Sage & Joe Bob Merritt – Paonia, CO

In this workshop, we will explore new methods in painting while learning about and observing the self. Over the past 6 years, Joe Bob and Amanda have been weaving their teachings into a complimentary and effective experience that anyone with any skill level and a good dose of curiosity would benefit from. Amanda will be teaching her approach to Ernst Fuchs’ revived early renaissance in-direct painting method that she calls ‘Painting with Light’. Participants will be encouraged to use the self portrait from a mirror as the primary painting study. Beginning with charcoal and developing the painting in a spiral sequence with values and then color, the evolution of the image is in all ways transformational. Joe Bob will offer a series of lectures woven between painting demos and studio time on an introduction to The Science of Man’s Conscious Self Evolution. Maps are useful. The maps presented in this series provide a clear description of the features that compose the knowable territories and behaviors of the occupants within the alleged self and its supposed mind. The real Magick then happens in the studio, as we collectively support each other in sharpening our inner and outer eye while practicing our craft. Because of the short class length all painting will be done in acrylic. Each participant will begin and aim to finish 1 painting during the length of the class. Basic materials are included in price.
